On 16 October, the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES) published an alert concerning products containing glyoxylic acid. Glyoxylic Acid is widely used in styling cosmetics for hair straightening and curling.
Glyoxylic acid in the EU and UK
Currently, this ingredient (CAS 298-12-4) is not subject to any ban or restriction neither in the European Union nor in the United Kingdom. Besides, the EU and UK have not included this substance in any of the upcoming restrictions and bans recently announced. However, the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) may be requested for the assessment of the substance following the evaluation’s conclusions run by the Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs, and Fraud Control (DGCCRF) and the French Ministry of Health.
Specifically, the ANSES reported four cases of kidney failure related to the usage of products containing glyoxylic acid in the framework of national cosmetovigilance activities.
